ZEC in voter education and registration blitz in Zvishavane

Zvishavane residents have lauded the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) for embarking on a voter education and registration blitz targeting first time voters.

Raising an awareness on voter education has been a challenge in mining communities, prompting ZEC to strengthen its voter education campaign in Zvishavane, targeting mostly first-time voters.

Residents who received voter education at Siboza business centre this Monday, commended ZEC for embarking on an exercise meant to help locals understand the significance of participating in electoral processes.

“As Siboza residents we are pleased to receive such education about voting. The information we got will help us to encourage each other to vote,” a resident said.

Another noted: “It is my first time seeing citizens being educated on issues of elections. This has opened up our minds to know that voting is our constitutional right.”

With lack of identify cards hampering the exercise, the District Election Officer, Mr Regressa Dube is upbeat they will record increased figures once government rolls out the planned national identity registration blitz.

“We are running two programmes – the voter education and registration blitz. We have challenges as some people do not possess the necessary identity documents. Our plea is for people take this exercise seriously,” he said.

Although the COVID-19 pandemic had stalled the issuance of identity documents, government has allocated a budget specifically for the national identity documents registration blitz.
