Gweru polytechnic student gets 5 years for theft
A 25 year old Gweru polytechnic student has been slapped with a 5 year jail sentence after the Gweru magistrate court found him guilty of 4 counts of unlawful entry and theft.
The state proved that for a period extending from the 13th to the 16th of August 2021, Leeroy Sabau who was working as a security guard for an unnamed security company unlawfully entered into one of the government’s offices at the Midlands New Government Complex and stole a black Hp probook laptop and more than six 16 gigabyte memory flashes among other valuables that belonged to the state.
The state further proved that, the accused unlawfully entered the same premises during the period extending from 28August 2021 to the 4th of January 2022 where he again stole electronic gadgets worth more than a 1 million Zimbabwe dollars that belonged to the state.
The court heard that all the stolen electronic gadgets were recovered in Sabau’s hands in Ascot Surbub in Gweru after the CID Gweru logged investigations on the case.
Sabau was sentenced to 5 years in jail with 2 years suspended on condition of good behaviour in the next 5 years and for the purposes of restitution.
