Kwekwe takes up drainage clean-up campaign
Kwekwe City Council has started clearing the drainage system and removing garbage around the city in a bid to avert flooding due to blockages.
The majority of urban councils have over the years battled floods caused by blocked drainage, especially in the central business district.
Kwekwe Acting Town Clerk Mrs Lucia Mkandla said they were conducting the clearing as part of the National Clean-Up Campaign launched last month by President Mnangagwa.
“We want to maintain cleanliness and high standards of hygiene in our city, so we have started clearing drainage system, removing all litter so that the system can allow free flow of water,” she said
“We have kept the momentum, we don’t want to wait for clean-up campaigns to do that.”
Mrs Mkandla said Kwekwe would continue to carry out routine clean-ups and regular refuse collection within the CBD and the entire city.
She urged residents to act responsibly and dispose of litter in bins.
“We will keep the momentum as we seek to maintain our status as the best city in the country in terms of cleanliness,” said Mrs Mkandla.
“We will continue with our routine refuse collection as scheduled. We thank the corporate world for the assistance they have been rendering us.”
