Govt to address skills deficit

Government says it is working on addressing skills deficit especially among tertiary students through the idea of innovation hubs which are currently being implemented at six state universities across the country.

The country boasts of having at least above 90 percent literacy rate but shockingly it still stands at 38 percent in terms of skills development, a worrying statistic which according to the Minister of Higher and Tertiary Education, Science and Technology Development Professor Amon Murwira has influenced the idea of innovation hubs to bridge the difference.

“The innovation hubs are expected to drive creativity amongst graduates and tertiary students, establishment of entrepreneurship opportunities and will be the key drivers towards the attainment of vision 2030,” he said.

Embracing technological advancements towards the eradication of poverty and creation of employment in the country are some of the priority objectives behind the idea of innovation hubs.

The hubs are being implemented at six state universities namely the University of Zimbabwe (UZ), National University of Science and Technology (NUST), Chinhoyi State University (CUT), Harare Institute of Technology (HIT), Zimbabwe National Defence University and the Midlands State University (MSU).
